My Father-A Role Model
======================
My father was known as Chhotubhai in his close circle but was known as a C R Desai in his official circles. His father and my Grandfather Ranchhodji Desai was a school teacher in then Bhavnager native state in Saurashtra. However my grandfather was a man of principle and value. He died in very early age when my father and uncles were very young. My eldest uncle was burdened with looking after entire family. However I could see that my father and all uncles inherited all best qualities of my Grandfather.
My father was serving at Hyderabad, Sindh (i.e. On the construction site of sakkar barrage, now in Pakistan )at the time of my birth.(i.e. In the year 1937). He was a civil Engineer and his immediate boss was one Bhailabhai Patel. Bhailalbhai Patel was subsequently known as 'Bhaikaka' ,and was architect of Vallabh Vidya Nager at Anand,Gujarat state.
My father was straight forward and honest officer. Therefore his transfer to Sindh was a challenge to him because then Sindh had bad name regarding its corrupt administration. However he faced the difficult situation very bravely. He instructed his subordinates and contractors that 'He will evaluate work on merit. He further made it clear that he is not concerned with what other people do but he wanted him to be kept away from those malpractices. His subordinates also knew that he will not go with any type of corruption in his section. It was British rule and Public works Department was very much involve in corrupt practices.
However he never bowed down to those malpractices. Therefore he was always respected by his bosses and even by his office staff. He once attended the British Darbar in the National dress with White khaddar Coat, Achkan and Cap. It shows how much nationalism and guts he carried during even British time. It also shows that even Britishers use to respect honest and efficient officers. His immediate boss Bhailal Patel was very friendly with him but my father was very firm in his official stand. He narrated me one incident regarding his travelling bills. which was cut on the recommendation of the clerk by the higher office. He return the file with a request that 'His bill may not be Sanctioned instead of cutting the same'. His boss Patel was surprised and during their evening card session told him 'Chhotubhai I am not going to comply with your request. I shall sanction your bill fully'. My father replied' If you are going to run the department without consulting your next officer and that too on the advice of you clerk. I have no other alternative then to protest.' In short his point of view was accepted by his boss coolly.
I stayed with my Nani's place during my child hood and I had not much exposure of my father until we shifted to Bombay in the year 1946 just before independence. He had taken the charge as a Assistant Housing Commissioner,Bombay Housing Board. However I recollect some of the incidents of his career before independence from what he narrated to me.
His greatest achievement in his life was that he stared his career from draft man in Bombay Public Works Department and reached the highest position of chief engineer from Maharashtra state. He has to join as draft man in PWD because he could not do well in his last year Engineering Exam because of his severe eye problems. He passed the said examination with the help of his very good friend, who use to read for him. He was a brilliant student through out. His elder brother Morarjibhai was paying for his educational expenses. He instructed him not appear in the last year Engineering Examination until his eyes problems are solved. However he refused to comply with his instructions stating that he does want to waste is hard earn money. Morarjibhai was very angry and he told him that' It will ruin your career and I will not be able to help you in any manner now onwards. However he faced his misfortune then very bravely but came out with flying colours at the end.
He was a City Engineer of Ahmadabad Municipality in forty's and played very important role in the development of Ahmadabad then. The Sardar and Gandhi bridges over Sabarmati river were constructed during his time.
In the quit India movement he took part and organized the strike of the Municipal Employees of the Ahmadabad Municipality. He was dismissed from the service. He faced very difficult time with large family behind. He tried to do some business and also served in his friend's company in Karachi. He faced those odds of life very bravely. However he was taken back into government service at the eve of independence. He shifted with family to Bombay from Ahmadabad on rejoining the Government job i.e as a Assistant Housing commissioner. Thereafter he became Housing commissioner of Bombay State. The Bombay was suffering from acute housing shortage after partition and also due to rush of the refugees. He was assigned to rehabilitate the refugees. The Ulhasnagar near Bombay was out come of the same. Besides that he constructed so many housing colonies in Bombay and including all big cities of Bombay state then. He was also member of the Bombay development authority and Director on Bombay Housing Finance society. The Bandra/Kurla creek and Juhu/Vile Parle schemes was executed by him with a suggestion to reduce the pressure on South Bombay. He gave a tenement in Rs 3000/- to weaker section of society at Goregoan under Motilal Nehru Nagar Scheme. It was considered to be cheapest then in India.
He was a admirer of his elder brother Morarjibhai but was his best critic whenever it was necessary. He was seldom wrong in his political analysis.
In job also he suffered as he was a brother of Morarjibhai. Morarjibhai use to set aside pertaining to his file telling that 'He is my brother so let other authority decide about his issue. Thus his political opponent use to always decide against him without looking at the merits. However that had never reduced the younger brother's respect for his elder brother. He use to fight out his case up to the end. The Blitz Magazine under karanjia was anti Morarji and use to write that ' Morarji's brother talk more about government under Nehru in his office. That shows that he was attracting the media then due to his sharp analytical comments.
He was always busy with his office work and use to go on clearing all files on the same day by sitting late up to midnight. We wondered when he use to get time to know about our progress in study. We were 8 brothers and sisters but he knew about each one of us. He had his assessment of his each child and use to point out their weakness at proper time. We are all well educated because of his those efforts.He believed in strict discipline and always wanted us to understand the value of time. He use to tell us 'You can leave your life as you like with your own money'. I understand now that he had valid point. He said 'There is a time for each and everything. He taught us to work sincerely, intelligently and laboriously for success in life as he believed that' The Success is made of stunner stuff.
We inherited from him courage, honesty and the spirit of not to bow down against injustice. He was a man of self respect and he maintained it until his last breath.
He was a versatile man and interesting personality as he was a fountain of knowledge on every subject. We got the best exposure of his qualities and some of them,we could inherit to successfully face our life. Therefore We are proud of him though he did not passed on much wealth to us but he made us capable to live life with values and character.

My Mother-A symbol of love,sacrifice and Will power
===================================================
My mother's childhood name was Kamubahen but it was changed as Shantabahen after marriage. We also started calling her as shantabahen as other people in joint family use to call her as Shanta. Her mother Manibahen and my Nani was also a women of very strong will power and lot of guts. My mother's father Thakorebhai was known as a 'Thakore Guard ' because he was a first Indian Guard in then Bombay- Baroda and Central India Railway. My nana died at very young age and my Nani has to brought up very large family. My mother inherited certain qualities from her mother.
My mother kept me at Valsad, my Nani's place when I was one and half year old. It was due to inevitable circumstances. It was a time generally children use to grow up with Maternal Grand parents in order to give some relief to hard press daughter in their personal life. It was a well neated old system suitable to that time. Our family was very large and my father has to move from one place to another which force our parents to keep some of my brothers/sisters at our Maternal Grand Mother place. Some time we missed our parents. I also missed my mother those days. My Nani was very kind and loving type but strict in educational and discipline matters. She use to tell us 'Your mother should not blame me for lack of giving proper training to all of you.' We had love, affection and everything at my Nani's place except strict discipline in day to day life.
I recollect that my father was transferred to Bombay and my mother rented house near our Nani,s place at Valsad for interim period. She came to my Nani's place after a long time. She looked at me and touch my body very affectionately and said 'My son you are really pool down. We are going to be to gather now onwards. I was moved very much with her lovable gestures. We moved to Bombay when I entered in to middle school then.
Our father was very strict but Mother was the ocean of love. Some time she use to scold our father also for being very strict with us. She was very generous and use to allow us to enjoy our life in the best way. We never felt that 'We are not having anything which other children are enjoying. Our friends were some time jealous of us in the way she use to provide us all facilities including food, pocket money etc. she was compensating up to some extent the strictness of our Dad. We have seen her shopping for family and house but seldom seen her shopping for her self.
She was very simple in dressing and rarely use to ware ornaments. However she was very good at public relations. she use to throw one big party once year for our relatives family friends and associates. she use to have frequent ladies parties on religious days wherein VIPs wives of Bombay city use to attend. Those days we use to live in a military barrack which was converted in to bunglow with several rooms, and garden around. It was situated on the way to Cuff Parade and on then Road known as Queens Road. Our house was exactly before the Bay of Back bay, Bombay. There were no concrete Garden then on the Back bay sea. We use to go for swimming in the Back bay sea of Bombay. I have described the place in order to show that it was centrally situated in the South Bombay and it was a place of attraction for our relatives, friends and associates of our parent. Therefore my mother use to take full advantage for building up social contacts. she was not highly educated but I wondered from where she learnt sophisticated public relation technique? However she was very resourceful and use to make her way out without help of her most busy husband i.e. our Dad. Therefore we never found any problems in our day to day difficulties. some time our mother use to suffer and sacrifice her pleasure in order to make our life pleasant.
She was very helpful to every one in our family friends and associates. She will be a first person to visit the place and to offer help to relatives or friends who has faced the calamities. Therefore every one liked her. However we also learn from her how to maintain our self respect. She was very kind to every one but if some one try to play with her self respect then she never use to tolerate.
she was a very good organizer and use to collect lot of donations for distributing the same to needy one. She use to attend every year 'Bhavnath Fair' at Gunagadh, Saurashtra and use to distribute blankets, clothes. and food to poor and sadhus who were attending the fair during Mahashivratri. She went on doing the same until she became disabled and was not able to move due to her acute diabetes and heart problem. Once she had heart attack and we were all waiting before her with tears in our eyes. She told us in firm voice' I know you people are very much worried and thinking that you are going to loose me. However do not worry, as am going to come back home'. She also made it thereafter. That was one of the strong demonstration of her will power. She was suffering from heart problem since more then decades but she never complained about it and went on taking it lightly. Once she was moving here and there in uneasy manner telling that she has gas problem. However that turnout to be ultimately heart problem. It was due to her will power that she survived and continued to take the burden of running such big family.Her diabetes was more or less genetic but she use to take lot of liberty with sugar. She use to jocularly tell 'It is better to die as satisfied soul by eating what you likes,instead of starving one self.
It was my great privilege that she came to stay with me in her last days. She said when she came to my house that 'My son I have very few days.' I told her ' Mom you will live longer and each day will be mine. I and my wife Varsha use to sit with her for some time and use to talk to her. She was loosing her strength and her eye sight was becoming weak day by day due to acute diabetes.She was compelled to take insulin every day. She use to tell me her past experiences and how injustice suffered by her in the joint family.
I remembers that once she said ' Your father must die before me as I do not want him to be unhappy after my death. It happened exactly as per her wish. Her health was very bad then my father and all expected that she may collapse at any time. but she survived my father. She also said with confidence at the death of my father that 'My days are now numbered'. What a will power to survive and to die as per her wish!

MY BROTHERS AND SISTER WHOM WE LOST
===================================
We were four brothers sisters and all well qualified. Two brothers became Engineers, and Two became lawyers including myself. I selected the career of banker even though qualified as lawyer. Our father wanted that we should have different career serving different professions. We had respect and love among ourselves but we were not ready to compromise with our principles and convictions. Therefore our father stated that we were all more or less individualistic and revolting type. I have already lost three brothers and one sister due. I will try to write my memories of them.
My Eldest Brother Indrajitbhai.
================================
He was very intelligent and man of caliber. He was successful in his profession and worked as successful lawyer in sphere of criminal law. He was also on government of India's penal of enforcement and custom law.
He took active part in the freedom struggle and was sent to jail at very early age of life. He was once arrested in the freedom struggle of India and prosecuted. He was asked his name and address by the judge wherein he replied that he is orphan and has been thrown out of house by his relatives. He wanted to save one of his close relatives who was serving in the court. However all his friends took the same stands in the court. He met many people in jail with good and dubious characters,which affected his future career and way of thinking. This shows how so many unknown hero's of freedom struggle suffered and lost their bright career. They were never rewarded and recognized which brought lot of misery in their personal life after Independence.
He was never happy with the situation after independence and was constructive critic of the leadership thereon. He was youth congress leader in Bombay and once he criticized the government under Nehru in the presence of then Prime Minister Jawaherlal Nehru. Panditji was very much impressed with his aggressive and youthful speech and he inquired with the others ' who is he?'. My uncle was then chief minister of Bombay state and some body said he is nephew of Morarjibhai. He smiled. He must have realised that it is gin in the family which produce such idealistic person.
He was very mischievous and revolting type in the Government Law College of Bombay and his principal T K Tope, former Vice Chancellor of Bombay University was very much aware of it. He was very active then in the student union of Government Law College Mumbai. He was very close to the friends like Manu Shroff, Ahmed Zakaria,(Bother of Dr Rafique Zakaria), Soli Sorabji, and Barjor Patel during his college life. Those all Friends had occupied prominent positions thereafter in the public life of Bombay(MUMBAI)
I also entered in the same college subsequently and somebody introduced me to him as a brother of Indrajit Desai. He was little bit worried thinking that trouble has once again come up. However I assured him that 'Sir I am having entirely different nature and attitudes then my brother.' He just smiled at me.
Indrajitbhai was very bold and never afraid of any one. He use to criticize my uncle Morarjibhai on his face but with respect. He was against ' Any type of injustice done to anyone'. He failed on some of the fronts to get justice which brought very adverse effect on his life. I will say he gave up his life at very early age due to such adverse situation.
In short many young man participated in the freedom struggle with very high expectation and ruin their career but the Independence of India has to yet fulfill their dreams.
2)Harshad Desai
================
Harshadbhai was elder then me but younger to my eldest brother Indrajit. He was a civil Engineer and worked with private and public sectors as a Senior Executive.
He was very soft, emotional and loving type. He always use to respect his elders and loved all younger brother sisters.
His nature was very much different than all my brother. He was always careful in his behaviour and talk in order to see that he does not hurt any body. Some time the quality of a person becomes a liabilities for him. Therefore my elder brother Indrajit was always use to dominate him. Besides that some time he preferred to suffer within even though he never agreed with other person. I think some people may have taken advantage of his fine qualities.
He started his career with then 'Shah Construction Co' Bombay as a Engineer in charge of their very important building project. That is how he was in charge of the construction of new Secretariat building of then 'Bombay State Government' and now the head quarter of Maharashtra Government.
There after he joined the maintenance department of life insurance corporation of India. He was Executive Engineer at very young age. He was very bright and ambitious and that made him very impatience. It brought his bright career to end early age due to his sad and sudden demise.
I was little bit near to him as a younger brother and he was very loving. He use to care for me as and when we use to be to gather anywhere. He always use to take care of me on road by holding hands and use to tell me you are always thinking about something. I recollect he use to pass on some pocket money for enabling us to enjoy our college vacation with cousins. His death was a great blow for me. Even my father was also very miserable at the death of two sons that too at very young age. He once told me I never knew that you will have to face this world now as a eldest son. You are not being even prepared for that. My brothers use to discussed my future and even my marriage that time. I use to feel that I was the most fortunate brother but their early death made me most unfortunate one and miserable. It also effected my life style thereafter i.e. from carefree to more serious and practical one.
3) My sister Dr Ushaben Desai
=============================
She was elder then me and Harshad but younger then Indrajit. I had more exposure with her during my childhood when our parents were in Karachi and we were all four brother sisters use to stay at our Nani's place at Valsad. It was a time of the freedom struggle of India. she also use to take part in rally and meetings accordingly. she use to climb on stool and use to address student meeting on those days.
Thereafter we moved to Bombay and she joined in the college at Bombay. she became first lady doctor in our family. She had privilege to look after my uncle Morarjibhai as doctor in the time of his illness/surgery. she served as a residential Medical Officer at Bombay and Jain hospital respectively. It was very difficult for her to serve due to her independent nature. She ultimately started her own clinic at Borivalli (East), BOMBAY. However She had genetic disease like diabetes which took her life at the age of 72.
My Younger Brother Pradeep
==========================
He was youngest of all my Brothers and died at the age of 68 at Long Island, New York,USA, On the September 29TH 2010. He was working with New York Rail Road project at that time.
He obtained the degree in a Electrical Engineering from Vallabh Vidyanagar,Anand,Gujarat. He was very aggressive and daring. He was a student leader during his college career and was general Secretary of the Engineering College,Anand.
He travelled widely and worked on the construction project of IFFCO, Kalol,and also at IFFCL at Baroda. During his job with Internationally known company 'DODSAAL', he worked on their pipelines projects at Dubai,Indonesia, Middle East.
He was temperamental but very much loving. He will put his view in very hard manner but will immediately apologize if he feels that he has hurt the other person. This was the finer side of him. He will ring up all family member periodically in order to remain in touch with them. In case of need he was ready to help them. I still miss those words when he use to call me 'Motabhai' and to make me understand that am suppose bear with his complaints and grevancies.I use to hear everything by surrendering him out of love and affection.
We had very pleasant and loveable childhood. We use to make lot of fun of to gather. He wanted to live a life as he liked. He was very sarcastic about my systematic life of disciplines. He use to tell you cannot make your House five star hotel. I did not like his rough use of things for which he had simple answer. 'If something is broken then new will come.'
I still remember those words but fail to understand why cannot I get my brother back which is loss to me. I do not remember anything about our last conversations on the phone except those loving word Motabhai. It is very unfortunate that I lost all my elder Motabhais along with one younger brother also who was calling me Motabhai.
Shakespeare says what is there in the name! However it is very touching because it reflects love thereon
